Meet Paul: Your Language Guide

Most Italian teachers speak Italian.

I understand how Americans learn it.

I’ve lived in both Italy and the United States, and I’m completely fluent in both languages. I know the mistakes Americans make when learning Italian, where pronunciation gets difficult, and how to explain things in a way that actually makes sense.

That’s why my students start speaking Italian from day one.

I don’t want you to spend months memorizing vocabulary and grammar without being able to have a real conversation. My lessons are practical, personalized, and focused on getting you comfortable actually speaking Italian.

Whether you’re preparing for a trip to Italy, pursuing Italian citizenship, reconnecting with your Italian heritage, or simply want to become fluent, I’ll build the lessons around you and your goals.

I’m a Boston University graduate and the founder of Paul’s Language School. I’ve spent years helping Americans learn Italian, and I know what works.

Let’s stop studying Italian and start speaking it.

Learning Italian with Paul has been an absolutely amazing experience! I've made so much progress since we started—my vocabulary, grammar, and confidence in speaking have all improved dramatically. He has a way of explaining things that just makes everything click, and he's always patient and encouraging, no matter how many questions I ask. On top of being a fantastic teacher, he's incredibly friendly and easy to talk to, which makes every lesson something I genuinely look forward to.

I have been taking Italian lessons from Paul for several months now. I feel like I really lucked out with him. His teaching methods are a perfect fit for my learning style. He is patient, gives on the spot corrections, and appropriately challenges me. I also appreciate how he incorporates information about Italian culture into lessons. I am blown away by how much I have learned in such a short time. I started taking lessons twice weekly because I was so pleased with my progress.

I scheduled a trip to Italy last summer for vacation. The last times I was there, I couldn't communicate with locals and wasn't able to ask for basic suggestions on places to eat and what to order, and because of this, I kept ending up at the same "tourist traps". This time I planned in advance and took 6 months of Italian lessons with paul to help me prepare -- so I didn't feel so nervous engaging with locals and asking for help/suggestions. What a difference it made! The trip was one of the best I've had to Italy because of it! I was able to communicate with locals, they respected my effort and I was rewarded with experiencing Italian culture in a way I haven't before. I had great conversation from my practice with Paul. Highly recommend doing this if you plan on going to Italy.

Paul is an excellent teacher who explains the rules of Italian very clearly and patiently. He has provided very helpful guidance for our high school student who is in honors level 3 Italian. Paul has a kind demeanor and is genuinely interested in getting to know his students as people, rather than viewing them just as clients. We are grateful for his instruction!

He is very patient, attentive and takes every opportunity to help his students improve (that includes lots of diligent correction in an encouraging way!). His lessons are well-structured, tailored to individual needs and very engaging. It has been effective and fun to learn Italian from Paul.

I have been taking private one-on-one lessons with Paul for a couple of weeks now. We do a weekly two-hour lesson, which I highly recommend! Paul is a great Italian teacher. He is very patient, friendly, and knowledgeable. I have studied Italian for many years since elementary school, but needed a refresher. We spend the first half of our lesson having a conversation about day-to-day things, Italian culture, latest news in Italy, etc. He is actually Italian, which makes all the difference. The conversations/speaking practice creates an "immersive" experience. We then spend the other half of the lesson going through grammar, vocabulary, homework, reading, etc. He provides real time feedback and corrections, which I love and help me improve. I would recommend him to anyone trying to learn Italian as a beginner or to someone more advanced, such as myself. Learning a different language should be fun. You don't want to be stuck with a boring teacher. Paul is definitely a fun and high energy teacher. Take his lessons now!

I've been taking Italian lessons with Paul for 4 months, and plan to continue. He is an excellent Italian tutor. He uses a variety of methods to teach, including writing, speaking, book examples and creative examples. He is patient yet pushes me to improve, which I really appreciate. He's non-judgmental, answers all of my questions (no matter how silly), and carefully corrects my mistakes. Learning a new language can feel so vulnerable, but he makes me feel comfortable enough to make mistakes, ask questions and actually enjoy the learning process.

No experience needed! Lessons are tailored to every level, from absolute beginners to advanced speakers.

  • Beginners: I use clear language to build your core vocabulary and speaking confidence step-by-step.

  • Intermediate/Advanced: I dive straight into conversational practice, accent reduction, and complex grammar.

Yes, guaranteed! From day one, you will be actively speaking real Italian. Even if you’re a complete beginner who has never spoken a word before.

I focus on immediate conversation over grammar rules. By the end of your very first 60-minute session, you will be able to read Italian and confidently construct simple sentences on your own.

Yes! All regular lessons are conducted online via Zoom/Google Meet for maximum flexibility, no matter where you are based.

In-person lessons are available subject to schedule & location: Because I split my time between the US and Italy, select in-person sessions or intensive language retreats can be arranged depending on my current availability and location.

I teach all levels, from complete beginner (A1) to advanced fluency (C2).

  • Beginner (A1–A2): Build everyday speaking skills, basic vocabulary, and essential grammar without feeling overwhelmed.

  • Intermediate (B1–B2): Bridge the gap to fluency, expand your vocabulary, and speak naturally with native phrasing.

  • Advanced (C1–C2): Master complex grammar, accent reduction, nuanced idioms, and professional/business language.

100% Personalization & Double the Speaking Time.

  • Vs. Apps (Duolingo/Babbel): Apps teach memorization, not live conversation. You get instant real-time feedback, accent correction, and guidance on how real native speakers actually talk.

Yes, absolutely! We tailor lessons specifically to your goal.

You will speak Italian on Day 1. Everyone learns at a difference pace but you can expect the following:

  • First Lesson: You’ll learn to read in Italian, speak basic phrases, and construct simple sentences independently.

  • 1 to 3 Months (1–2 lessons/week): You’ll hold basic conversations, order at restaurants, handle travel situations, and introduce yourself with confidence.

  • 6+ Months: You’ll discuss complex topics, navigate everyday life in Italy, and express your opinions naturally.
